The Burning Bush Encounter: Sermon on Exodus 3.

This is an outline of a sermon I preached at People’s Church, Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Sunday 28th July 2019. The sermon covers some key points from the meeting God had with Moses at the burning bush. I pray the outline will be useful to you.

I. IT HAPPENED IN THE MUNDANE

  • God met with Moses while he was attending to his daily work as a Shepherd.

Exodus 3:1-2 “Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.”

  • God meets us in expected ways in unexpected places – It often happens in the daily routine of our lives.
  • He met Moses while tending sheep, Gideon while threshing, Elisha while ploughing.

II. GOD CALLED MOSES BY NAME

Exodus 3:4 “When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”

  • Like with Moses, God calls us by name too.

Isaiah 43:1 “But now, this is what the Lord says- he who created you, O Jacob he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. ”

Isaiah 49:1 “Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name.”

  • God also revealed His name in Exodus 3:14 as a God of the present – As ‘I Am’

Psalms 68:19 “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens.”

III. MOSES REDISCOVERED THE HOLINESS OF GOD

Exodus 3:5-6 “Do not come any closer,” God said. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

  • Let’s seek for the holiness of God afresh in our lives.

IV. THE ASSURANCE OF HIS DELIVERANCE TO MOSES

A. HE SEES AND HEARS YOU

Exodus 3:7 “The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.”

B. HE WILL DO WONDERS FOR YOU

Exodus 3:20 “So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.”

C. HE GAVE MOSES FAVOUR BEFORE ENEMIES

Exodus 3:21 “And I will make the Egyptians favourably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty handed.”

Moses was given great favor before his enemies.

D. HE WILL GIVE PROPHETIC DIRECTION

Exodus 3:12 “And God said “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

As we read about Moses’ meeting with God at the burning bush, let us be challenged for a burning bush encounter in our lives as well.
